The Scots College

The Scots College is more than just a school for boys.

Academic excellence is critically important, and our record demonstrates our success. But Scots aims for an even higher goal. We prepare boys to succeed in a world that is constantly being reinvented.

Our deep understanding of how boys grow and learn is captured in our Brave Hearts Bold Minds philosophy. This means we support every boy, at every stage of development, to become a confident, well-grounded young man of integrity. They will become the fine young men of the next generation who will, in their turn, reinvent their world. This is why academic success alone does not prepare boys for the future. A strong sense of identity, values, and character is vital.

The College has intentionally chosen a path where active learning works with academic excellence. Our local, national and international programs, inspire our boys to become principled, compassionate and engaged citizens of their College, their community and their world.

This is The Scots Advantage.

The Scots College is a distinctive Australian school that defends the honourable traditions, adventures and learning of boys. We exist to inspire boys to learn, lead and serve as they strive for excellence together. Scots has been raising fine young men since 1893 from Sydney, New South Wales and many different nations from around the world.

Scots boys learn in an atmosphere of excellence within a culture of high expectations where they can become creative, confident, aspirational and accomplished learners.

Our Brave Hearts Bold Minds educational philosophy provides learning experiences that are structured according to the needs of boys, rather than their age or year level.

An innovative, colourful and adventurous curriculum informed by Reggio Emilia principles awaits the youngest Scots boys as they enter the Rose Bay, Early Years Centre and Early Learning Centre, within the Preparatory School, harnessing their natural curiosity, energy and desire for exploration.

As they progress in the Preparatory School, young boys become ‘fine Scots boys’. Boys are encouraged to develop genuine wisdom through insight based on empathy, an understanding of humanity and the importance of interdependence in the world in which they live.

Adventure is core to a boy’s experiences in his early Senior School years. In these years, there is a focus on collaborative learning. Boys develop an expansive view of their world and become increasingly aware of what it means to be a global citizen, to be respectful of different cultures and to take responsibility in one’s community.

As boys develop autonomy, emphasis shifts to the acquisition of major scholarly ways of thinking. Students are exposed to literary, scientific, mathematical, historical, cultural and artistic approaches to understanding our world, advancing their understanding through a variety of increasingly sophisticated opportunities to demonstrate their accomplishments in unfamiliar, unstructured contexts.
The Scots College’s state-of-the-art facilities and innovative boy-centred curriculum and programs combine to create an atmosphere of excellence where boys are inspired to learn, lead and serve as they strive for excellence together.

Specialist facilities include the Graeme Clark Centre for Innovation in the Sciences, designed to promote in the hearts and minds of Scots boys a love and appreciation of the sciences. This Maths and Science Centre provides leading infrastructure and technology platforms to inspire the best from students and teachers and transform the educational experience.

The Scots College continues to plan for its future, with the construction of the John Cunningham Student Centre. Formerly known as the Stevenson Library, it will deliver essential student amenities and learning spaces with a focus on learning support, student counselling, academic research and professional learning.

The former Stevenson Library building was completed in 1988. It is an imposing, block-like, flat-roofed building, without features or a main entrance. It is an institutional building that is not well suited to a leading contemporary education experience, and is no longer fit for purpose.

The Centenary Centre houses the College’s highly regarded Music Department and the Christian Studies Department. Other facilities within the Centre include the acoustically beautiful Coote Theatre auditorium and an amphitheatre for outdoor performances and meetings.

Specialist music facilities include a recording studio, computer keyboard laboratories, rehearsal rooms for ensembles, specialist music classrooms, teaching studios for instrumental staff and practice rooms.

Scots’ Sports Science Lab, used during Science and PDHPE classes, is equipped with technologies that quantify performance measures, metabolic rates and body compositions.

The Scots College has a commitment to inspire and extend the interests, talents and skills of boys. A wide range of Co-Curricular Programs that can be passionately pursued at every stage of the Scots journey.

These include Music, Drama, Dance, Cadets, Pipes and Drums, Community Service, Chess, Debating and Public Speaking, Photography, Film, Media and Audio Visual.

The Co-Curricular Program exposes boys to the concept of what it means to be a global citizen and creates opportunities for them to be active and engaged in the world.

Sport is synonymous with the Scots experience, encouraging boys to discover personal strength born of competition and camaraderie. Boys compete in a number of competitions, including the AAGPS (Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools of New South Wales).

The following sports are offered at the College:

  • Athletics

Boarders have been a vital part of the Scots community for over a century.

Boarding at Scots, available from Year 5 onwards, offers high quality education in a safe and nurturing environment, where your son is supported to reach his full potential. As a boarder, your son will stay at one of our five Boarding Houses where he will be provided with strong pastoral care and individual attention while experiencing the joys of being a part of his House 'family'.

Pastoral Care features prominently in all aspects of College life and in the day-to-day experiences of each individual in our community. The Scots College has a strong pastoral care ethos and is committed to looking after the needs of boys and nurturing their growth and development within a safe and caring environment. Pastoral care and student welfare programs are whole-school in nature. The health, well-being and safety of students is measured and managed through a carefully planned T-12 pastoral care system and is embedded within the curriculum, the House system, the Tutor program, staff professional development and other key policies that guide procedures throughout the College.

The Quest for Excellence through adventure, curiosity, creativity and growth.

Our Faith and Tradition which inspire truth, honour, loyalty and commitment.

Leadership through Teams in a spirit of service, compassion, fun and community.
In keeping with the challenge of our Christian foundation, Scots boys will be fine young men of integrity and principle who support each other in their quest for excellence.
In seeking to serve God faithfully, The Scots College exists to inspire boys to learn, lead and serve as they strive for excellence together.

“Scots offers something for everyone. Wherever your interests lie – whether it’s music or sailing, drama or volleyball, debating or rugby – Scots can bring you together with like-minded boys and enthusiastic teachers to follow your passion. The best part of my Scots experience was leading the Pipes and Drums as Pipe Major. During my time with the Pipes and Drums, we toured twice to Scotland, played in the World Piping Championships, won state and national competitions and learned how to work and play together as a tight-knit team.” Year 12 Student
